PLANETS
MERCURY: In Roman mythology, Mercury was the messenger for the gods and the protector of
travelers and merchants.

The planets atmosphere has been blown away by solar winds; there is almost no air on it. It can
be seen from the Earth after only an hour or so of the rising or setting Sun. It is the fastest orbiting

planet, with long days due to its slow rotation. It has no moons
or rings. As the planet's massive iron
core cooled, it shrunk and acquired wrinkles, called 'lobate scarps.

PLANETS
VENUS: It's named after the Roman goddess of beauty and love. Venus and Earth are about
the same size and early astronomers believed that Venus as Earth's sister planet, and had lived on it.
However, its temperatures were found to be too harsh for life to survive on it. Heat is trapped on
the planet's surface by its thick layer of atmospheric clouds. It is the hottest of the planets, with the
longest days. Venus has no moons or rings and · it is the only planet that rotates clockwise.

PLANETS
MARS: Named after the Roman god of war, this planet is known as 'the Red Planet', perhaps also
because of its red soil. It is prone to extreme dust storms, leading to a fascinating topography
with huge sand dunes that constantly shift. Mars excites scientists because its mild temperature is
more like the Earth's than that of any other planet, and the 20th century itself saw 58 probes or missions to the planet. Evidence suggests that Mars once had rivers, streams, lakes, and even an ocean.

As the planet's atmosphere depleted into outer space, it's surface water began to evaporate and eventually dried up. Now the only water on Mars is either frozen in the polar caps or underground.

PLANETS
JUPITER: In Roman mythology, Jupiter overthrew his father Saturn,
the king of gods. It is the largest of all the Solar System's planets and planet-sized themselves. Jupiter's Great Red Spot is where a giant storm has been raging for at least 400 years across an area dethroned, before being the Roman god of the skies, larger than the Earth. This giant planet has no solid surface. Pluto was considered the ninth planet Under its atmosphere till 2006. Now it's named a 'dwarf planet. is a large liquid ocean
of mostly hydrogen and some helium. There's no in-between. the atmosphere cools and thickens and becomes the ocean! You can see four of Jupiter's moons with a pair of binoculars at night.
Jupiter spins really fast, taking only 10 hours to go from night today. For that reason its middle has
been stretched out.

PLANETS
SATURN: Saturn was the Roman god of agriculture, the son of Uranus, the king of gods, whom he
dethroned, before being dethroned himself by his son Jupiter. Saturn has hundreds of beautiful rings
made of ice and rock. In October 2009, NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope discovered a never-seen-
before glowing ring around Saturn. Under the clouds of methane and helium, the planet's sky turns
slowly into the liquid until it becomes a giant ocean of chemicals. Saturn has 47 moons.

Distance from the Sun: 1.43 billion km
Duration of One Orbit: 10,759 days
Rotation: 10 hours
Temperature: Maximum: -191°C; minimum:-130°C

PLANETS
URANUS: Uranus was the Roman god of the skies husband of Earth. and the king of the gods. Unlike
all the other planets and most of the moons in our Solar System, Uranus spins on its side, on a
horizontal rather than a vertical axis. It is believed that long ago a very large object smashed into
it and changed the direction of Uranus's spin. It may have an ocean of water beneath its clouds,
a large rocky core, and could contain trillions of large diamonds. Uranus has 11 narrow rings and
13 moons.

PLANETS
NEPTUNE: Neptune was the Roman god of water and oceans. For many centuries nobody knew of
this planet. It was discovered relatively late by Johann Galle and Heinrich D'Arrest in 1846.

On Neptune rages a giant storm, the Great Dark Spot, much like the storm on Jupiter. It is not known
how long this storm has been active, because of it was studied only recently with the help of robotic
explorative probes. Neptune has 13 moons and six rings that circle it.
